Manado, once described in guide books as pleasant and one of Indonesia's cleanest cities, is not what it used to be anymore. The infrastructure has deteriorated considerably and the city has become quite dirty. Efforts are under way now to change this again but with the traditionally slow Indonesian administration this will certainly take a couple of years. There isn't much to see or to do in Manado anyway, so better don't consider spending much time in the city. Rather go for some of the many attractions in the surroundings which are described on this site. The Smiling Hostel at the harbour used to be Manado's favourite backpacker place: lots of information, an ever cheerful staff, the location and cheap rates made it the best option for budget travellers. Due to changes in ownership and management the situation deteriorated, and the Smiling Hostel finally closed its doors on June 09, 2001. Now the Victory Inn, Jl. Sam Ratulangi 58, seems to have become a travellers' favourite in Manado. If you arrive by plane there is usually an "Airport Representative" from the hotel waiting for guests.
